MBR Day 21-22 Details Details Details

The last few workdays on the bathroom have all been filled with those niggling little details that are no fun at all.

We cut and installed the baseboards, shoe moulding, and the crown moulding. Crown moulding hurts my head. Visualizing what I have to do for the different cuts is never easy. I could have coped the corners, but that is it’s own set of problems. Besides, I have Ivy doing the spackling work behind me and she always cleans up my little mistakes very well.

All of the moulding installation was made extra fun and exciting by the lack of square corners. One wall is over an inch out of square over the course of 10 inches.

We had an electrician in to wire up the vanity lights. He showed me that they had used some creative wiring when they built the place. The line runs from the breaker to the light then to the switch and back to the light. No wonder I couldn’t figure it out. He said the reason they probably did that was to support an unswitched plug in the light fixture for a hair dryer or razor. The fixture we pulled out didn’t have that feature, so I guess they swapped it out at some point in the past. I also had him install a GFI outlet where they used to have a standard one. Gotta have those in the bathroom nowdays.

I installed the ceiling light. The house wiring wouldn’t support the first one we bought so we switched it out with a simple one that is less of a decoration and more of somethng that just blends in and won’t be noticed much.

Ivy has been doing the spackling and caulking – I make too big a mess to be trusted with it. Things are starting to look kind of ugly with all the little touch up spots that need to be hit. We won’t do the touch up paint until I finish the trim work.

Still to do:

  • Sand and paint the window trim
  • Install and paint door & trim
  • Caulk vanity, tile edge, trimwork
  • Fill, sand, and paint the gaps where the old ceiling light was
  • Touch up all paint.
  • Rain-X the the glass
  • Clean up everything

It doesn’t sound like a lot, but that stuff takes time. It may be another day or two before we finish the endless bathroom remodel.
