This has the  potential to become a huge mess. But if we manage to get it right, we will add a lot of value to the house. After much debate and planning, we’ve decided to leave most of the cabinetry in place and veneer it. We will sand the existing doors, then paint all of it. We will put down a nice laminate floor to replace the 50 yr old fake brick vinyl that is there now. A new dishwasher, sink, cabinet hardware, and counter top will also go in. We’ll have to see what that buys us.

Last Sunday afternoon we made what I think will be the biggest change to the feel of the space. We removed the cabinet hanging over the island between the kitchen and the breakfast area. You can see where it was in the pictures. That big dark cabinet hanging in the middle of the space really divided things up and made both rooms feel small. Even with it just ripped out and no cleanup to the reamains, the rooms feel bigger and brighter. I’m building a cabinet to go on the right side that matches the one on the left. Once that is up, I think the rooms will really look bigger and better.
