Sailors have a sad need to create a vocabulary for any number of things that there are already perfectly good words for. There is no need for words like galley, head, or sole. Everyone, sailors and non-sailors do just fine with kitchen, bathroom, and floor. Don’t even get me started on lines versus sheets versus ropes. Twenty years of rock climbing tells me the word rope can work just fine all by itself.
I’ll even give sailors a few words unique to boating. Rudder, mast, bow, and keel are descriptors of things that are pretty much boat specific. I’ll even go so far as to give them the terms port and starboard since they are names for one side or the other of the boat.
However, going back to the pictures with this post, there is no need for bulkhead. What a waste of syllables. Everyone gets it when you say walls. If people just want to make language obtuse and hard to understand then let’s break out the Speedos and fanny packs and be French. Sheesh. I like my new wall with the new electrical panel. I’m still working on the bathroom walls and I’m pretty sure they will be real nice too.
