Once we got the last of the mortar up, we spent a few hours sweeping, dusting, and vacuuming everything in sight. The previous owners left the place none too clean to start with. With all the added dust from construction, the place was seriously dirty.
Then we began the next step. We decided to float our hardwood floors. When they are glued down they are just too hard underfoot. We wanted a little give. So we cut and measured, measured and cut, and then cut and measured some more while we laid out the underlay material for the floor. This took much longer than we expected. It was hard work, even with the AC running, we were sweating. My knee pads were a gooey mess. My knees were, too.
Once that was done, we spent three days on our knees transforming this:
Into this:
Actually, we spent the time going from down on our knees putting the wood in place to jumping up and cutting end pieces to fit. Our chop saw got quite a workout. So did our tired bodies.
With the floors done, the next step was painting the place. Here, Ivy and I showed some good sense and hired a friend who has a paint and drywall company to come do the job. She and I were exhausted and would have ended up making a mess somewhere. Gene and Taylor came in and did a great job painting for us.
The paint turned out great. We like the colors. They make the place feel comfy and clean.
